Privacy policy 🔍

What the club writes in its book about you, and your right to read it. In plain English, as ever.

1. Who keeps the book

Not The Butler is operated by Ginger, Dalfaber Park, Aviemore. PH22 1QF, the data controller for the club. Questions, requests and stern letters all reach us at butler@notthebutler.com.

2. What we collect, and why

  • Your account — email address, name and sign-in details, handled by our authentication provider Clerk, so you can sign in and we can tell detectives apart.
  • Your detective record — codename, case progress, buttons, ranks, agency membership and clubroom activity, stored in our database (hosted by Neon in London, UK), because that is the entire game.
  • Billing status — whether your membership is active, and which plan. Card details go straight to Stripe; the club never sees or stores them.
  • Email — your address is used to send club email such as the Sunday Dispatch, delivered via Resend.
  • Anonymous analytics — aggregate page statistics via Vercel Analytics, with no advertising trackers and no cross-site profiling.

3. Cookies

Only the essential kind: session cookies from Clerk that keep you signed in. No advertising cookies, no third-party trackers, no following you around the internet. The Butler considers that sort of thing vulgar.

4. Who we share it with

Nobody buys or borrows your data. It is processed only by the services that run the club: Clerk (sign-in and billing), Stripe (payments), Neon (database), Resend (email) and Vercel (hosting and analytics) — each under their own data-processing terms. We disclose information beyond that only if the law requires it.

5. How long we keep it

For as long as you have an account. Delete your account, or ask us to, and your personal data is removed; anonymised statistics may remain (the club’s record of “most accusations before breakfast” survives its holder).

6. Your rights

Under UK GDPR you may ask for a copy of your data, have it corrected or deleted, object to or restrict its processing, and take it elsewhere. Email the Butler and it will be handled promptly and without fuss. If we ever disappoint you, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk) — though we’d appreciate the chance to put it right first.

7. Children

The club is intended for grown-up group chats and is not directed at children under [16 — your call]. We don’t knowingly collect data from them; if you believe we have, write in and we’ll remove it.

8. Changes

If this policy changes in any way that matters, we’ll announce it before it takes effect. The current version always lives at this address. Last updated July 2026.

The rest of the paperwork lives in the terms of membership.
