Terms of membership 🖋️
The unavoidable paperwork, kept mercifully short and in plain English. Last updated July 2026.
1. Who we are
Not The Butler is operated by Ginger, Dalfaber Park, Aviemore. PH22 1QF (“the club”, “we”). You can reach the management — well, the Butler, who passes things along — at butler@notthebutler.com.
2. What the club is
An online detective club: interactive mysteries you solve solo or with your group chat. The first case is free for signed-in detectives. A paid membership unlocks every case and chapter for as long as your membership is active.
3. Membership and billing
Membership is a monthly subscription at the price shown at the front desk (/pricing) when you join. Payments are processed by Stripe via our billing provider, Clerk — the club never sees or stores your card details. Your membership renews automatically each month until you cancel. If the price ever changes, we’ll tell you before your next renewal, not after.
4. Cancelling and refunds
You can cancel any time from your account. Your membership then runs to the end of the period you’ve paid for and simply doesn’t renew — your reputation, ranks and trophies remain on your record. The club never forgets; it keeps a book.
If you’re a consumer in the UK, you have a statutory 14-day cooling-off period after first taking out membership. By joining, you ask us to open the club to you straight away; if you cancel within those 14 days we’ll refund you in full, less nothing, because quibbling over pennies is beneath the club. Email the Butler and it shall be done. Nothing in these terms limits your statutory rights.
5. Your account and fair play
Your account is yours alone — one detective per account, agencies of up to twelve. Don’t share credentials, resell access, scrape the case files, or attempt to interfere with the service. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or the club rules, though we’d far rather not — warnings come first except in serious cases.
6. The mysteries
All cases, characters, text and artwork are the club’s copyright. Share screenshots, gloat in the group chat, quote the Butler at parties — personal, non-commercial use is warmly encouraged. Republishing whole cases or solutions is not. Rule IV about spoilers also applies, morally if not legally.
7. The service, honestly stated
We work to keep the club open around the clock, but like any manor it occasionally needs maintenance, and we can’t promise it will never be briefly unavailable. We provide the service with reasonable care and skill. We’re not liable for losses that aren’t our fault or weren’t foreseeable — and nothing in these terms excludes liability where the law says it can’t be excluded.
8. Changes and the law
We may update these terms as the club evolves; material changes will be announced before they take effect, and the current version always lives at this address. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes belong to its courts — though we would much rather solve things over tea.
